EMG Tip of the Week – Mentor’s Matter
Successful teachers seek out mentors of their own
Reflective teachers can easily get disheartened if they don’t have someone a bit older and wiser offering support. You are never too old or wise for a mentor. Mentors can be that voice that says, “Yes your reflections are correct,” or “No, you are off because….” and provide you with a different perspective. Being able to see things from a different perspective and make sure that the level of reaction is appropriate as well only comes with experience. Sometimes we respond in a way that actually needs a cool, calm and collected approach – knowing where something is on a rating scale from 1 to 10 where 10 equals death. Mentors are important to help direct, to help correct and help encourage us on our own professional journey. Everyone needs mentors – choose carefully.
